Good service and good food
A very down home restaurant with good food and great service. The decor gave me alot of conversation material as I took a walk down nostalgia lane! A nice spot for a quick bite or a hearty meal. The desserts were very tempting but I didn't have room for anything else after a pulled pork sandwich with fries and cole slaw.
Food was to die for. Staff were wonderful and gave me and my parents free pie and french fries. Best food i've ever had on vacation! Definitely recommend the philly cheese steak and peanut butter pie! Really wish I had one of their restaurants in my area. 10/10 would recommend.
The Farmer is the definition of the best in Southern small restaurant cooking and service. Try one of Tammy's homemade pies!
Love this little place we were passing through and found it. Defintely will be stopping when we are in South Hill again! If you haven't been go !
Found The Hungry Farmer on the internet. The special was my favorite! Biscuits and gravy It was fabulous! The owners are very nice! Will come here again. Thank you for the great food and service!!!
Quaint place, good food, friendly staff.
The surfaces of everything in the restaurant have a slimy feel. The ventilation is none existent, and the food is not good. I ordered potatoes and onions, I received deep fried frozen potatoes with raw onions. The coffee is something reminiscent of the mud received after coffee has been sitting awhile. It was tepid when I received it-she took my cup and microwaved it to warm it up. This place has gone down hill where all s--t rolls.
The restaurant is cute, and the young man waiting on us in the morning was very pleasant. Unfortunately, the food was not. I have never had worse coffee in my life, and the omelet was overcooked with raw veggies on the inside. I love onions, but not a pound of them. It wouldn't have been quite as bad if the prices were reasonable, or if my toast wasn't cold and hard. I don't know many hungry farmers that can afford to eat here, yikes!
Great food, great people, friendly place
The staff provided great customer service. The food was delicious especially the hamburger steak and coleslaw! We stopped by for lunch and dinner.
What a great little place to stop great staff and lovely food and plenty for us all.
Best breakfast we have found in the area! Cheesy scrambled, over- medium eggs, crispy thin bacon and fresh sausage patties, and home fries with grilled onions cooked to perfection. Make the drive or jump off the interstate 85 for a great home-style meal. Ribs, burgers, fish, shrimp, homemade fresh pies and biscuits with sausage on Sundays. Owner-operator Scott and pie-maker waitress Tammy are super friendly. A great place to relax and enjoy great food!!!!!
We just stopped for lunch while traveling! My husband got the chicken pot pie which was excellent, you could tell it was home made! I had a BLT which is basic but it was awesome. Real sweet place with great service!
Have eaten there several times over the past years and have never been disappointed. Good selection of meats, great southern fried chicken, vegetables, wonderful salad bar and desert bar. Very nice employees and just a great place to eat overall. Love the new clean look. I believe a wonderful cook from the past is back in the kitchen. The chicken was fantastic... the way I remember it from years ago. I'll definitely go back again and again.
Food is good. Waitress was nice. 2 stars for the rude, obnoxious owner/cook. Someone didnt love him as a child and even less now. Wont return. Sad, because the food was good. Whoever you are, Sir, take a personal inventory, swallow your pride and just give decency a try.
There is a very happy overall wearing man (I'm assuming he's the farmer) to welcome you to the restaurant. Then a nice lady will welcome you to your table, take your order, cook your food, bring your food to the table and tab out your bill. She does it all.The atmosphere is very country. And I do believe that is why the people come here. The people are very friendly but the food is just food. I had the fried fish with baked potato and corn. The fish was good but a little greasy and the corn had been out all day for sure.Considering it's pretty much the only place around in a very small town I'd recommend this place if you like regular American food and for some odd reason you got off the highway in South Hill! Bring cash if you can because they prefer that you pay in cash instead of card.
Good, simple food. Never disappointed, owners are super friendly, locally owned. Beats a big chain and the prices are good.
Great food and service! A Must stop if your traveling rt 85!
Hungry Farmer sandwich is top notch. Owner is super friendly and kind.
only reason I'm giving 1 star is because the server was really nice, but other than that the food sucked and I really don't know how you can mess up pancakes. it was a 35 minute wait for 2 pancakes and bacon and there was maybe only 1 other person that ordered from the kitchen. I'll never be going back
My husband & I stopped in on Saturday. Was recommended by a local. My husband ordered the salad, it was extremely small, mostly lettuce. I have seen side salads bigger. I ordered chili cheese fries. I questioned the waitress, if the order was right, upon delivery. I got a plate of fries, no chili whatsoever, a few red beans & a tiny bit of cheese melted. Neither was good or filling. First & last time we go there. Our bill was $25 + tip. Not worth the time or money.
Such a cute place with a homely feel. My husband and I appreciate the hospitality from all the staff. Including our waitress, Beverly. We came across this lovely town passing by to get a hotel for the night. Your establishment was close so we decided to indulge ourselves. Such a caring staff that welcomed us right in. Everyone here is truly blessed and deserve so much in life. Thank you as such a place should not go unnoticed.Helen and Mark MurrayPittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Great taste, great atmosphere, greets prices. Worth the extra ten minutes to stop here instead of a fast food joint if you’re passing through. Brisket had great flavor and was very tender!
This place was amazing! The pulled pork sandwich was the best I've ever had! The chicken tortilla soup was not good. The quesadilla was awesome and we loved the tomato basil soup! The owner seems mean to most people but with little kids he is so nice! The food is REAL southern cooking!
That has to be the nice place with all of the history all over the walls in pictures and cool antique stuff most kids don't know what are. BUT YOU MUST TAKE AWAY ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES Or they will just google it a make you thank they are. Really Smart
Good food, service and prices
What a great little place to eat at! when we take vacations the family rule is we are not allowed to eat somewhere that we can eat at while home. We love to find small businesses. So we went out of our way a little bit to stop in here and we were not disappointed. Food was great, loved the atmosphere, and staff was so nice.
The pulled pork sandwich (with coleslaw) was as good as advertised. We pulled off 95N to give it a try, and we weren't disappointed. The hand cut fries were also very good. Owners are friendly, but you gotta be patient when it's busy. We didn't try the coffee (other reviewers didn't seem to like it).
Pulled pork was tender and delicious. Fries were soggy... Local atmosphere. Clean...
Ordered barbecue plate special very tasty. Plan on going back asap!
Delicious catfish, baked beans, and coleslaw. I enjoyed every bite. The service was great.
Very good service and excellent food. The Bacon Burger with grilled onions was delicious. The Pulled Pork sandwich was fantastic. The fries are hand cut and very good. If you want a home cooked meal then go to this place. We had a wonderful conversation with the staff.
Place to go if your looking for a nice home cooked meal.
The coffee leaves a lot to be desired. But, on a positive note, I had a BLT and it was really good! The tomatoes were fantastic, the bacon and toast was cooked just right. My husband had the pancakes. He said they were good, but he couldn't finish them. If they served better coffee, I would give them 5 stars. They should try Community Coffee
Had breakfast. The breakfast sandwich was rather small but the sausage was very good. The rest of my party agreed: tasted good and had good flavor but pricey for what you got. Nicely decorated. Overall I enjoyed it and am interested in trying the lunch and dinner selections. They post daily specials above the register area although we didn't know this until we had ordered. No big deal. The menu and entrees are (or at least seem to be based on the menu) rather traditional Southern cooking. That's a good thing.Again, my family and I will be trying this place again.
I discovered this absolute gem while riding my bicycle from South Carolina to DC. Our breakfast and lunch was so good we decided to return for dinner. Fall off the bone ribs were probably the best I've ever had! The staff and patrons were so hospitable and we thoroughly enjoyed our visits.
Just had breakfest here and it was perfect! It's so cute and the guy who served me was super nice!
The food here and service is excellent. We stopped here on the way to North Carolina and made the right decision based off of the reviews. The restaurant deserves 10 stars by far, the breakfast was delicious!
I got a bbq sandwich and it was yummy! A lot of food on your plate!!!
A little small mom and pop restaurant in downtown South Hill. We went on a Saturday evening around 4:30. I got the 8oz. Rib eye and baked potato. Steak was a little under cooked but waitresses gladly took back and about 3 minutes later done to my taste. Nice and tender. Waitress was very helpful. Will go back again.
Not bad, the hotel room was clean and the breakfast was good.
This is a little gem not far from the interstate. Worth a little drive if you're passing through, and a much better option than the fast food near the exit. The BBQ sandwich is very tender and seasoned well, even without sauce. The sides all seemed to be homemade, and not just out of food service delivery. The ladies were very nice and helpful.
Fantastic food. Owner and waitress were great. Friendly and very helpful. Extremely clean. Definitely recommend. Be prepared to take food home!
Good lunchCooked it so we could see him doing it freshlyWaitress did a fine job attending to us
We stopped in on a Thursday evening. They weren't very busy but this was a good find. The cheeseburgers were very good and my daughter ate every bite of her spaghetti. My son had the rib basket. The meat was very tender. The highlight was the pie! They had four homemade choices and there were four of us so we tried each one. Peanut butter pie was amazing! We ranked it #1 but the coconut cream was a very close runner up.
Great diner in South Hill, VA. The atmosphere was delightful and the meals were good. The loaded hotdog was delicious!
The cole slaw is nearly as good as my grandmother’s. It’s better than key lime pie (but you can get that too). The French fries are hand cut and excellent.
Delicious is all I can say!!!
Great food! Brisket was amazing
